This Day in (Medieval) History: January 21





763 – Battle of Bakhamra between an Alid army led by Ibrahim ibn Abdallah and an Abbasid army under Isa ibn Musa. The Alids were defeated and Ibrahim was

mortally wounded, later dying of his wounds the following month, which ended the Alid rebellion against the Abbasids. Ibrahim's

brother Mohammad had previously been killed on 6 December 762 during the siege of Medina.



879 - Death of Count Boudouin of Flanders.





917 Death of Duke Erchanger of Swabia.





1077 - Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV asked Pope Gregory VII to lift his sentence of excommunication, after a meeting of German aristocrats and prelates at Trebur in late 1076 had

determined to elect a new emperor unless Henry IV reversed course. Henry had to dismiss his excommunicated advisors, accept Gregory VII as the legitimate Pope,

and accept Papal jurisdiction in disputes between the emperor and the German dukes and bishops.



1118 - Death of Pope Paschal II.



1276 - Cardinal Pierre de Tarantaise became Pope Innocent V.



1287 - The treaty of San Agayz was ratified by the Muslim rulers of Menorca, granting the island to King Alfonso III of Aragon.



1338 - The future King Charles V of France was born.
